Mount Isa is situated 900 kilometers West of Townsville.
Mount Isa is situated 900 kilometers west of Townsville and 1900 kilometers north west of Brisbane. The city of Mount Isa covers an area of over 41,000 square kilometers stretching to the township of Camooweal just before the Northern Territory border. Which makes Mount Isa geographically, the largest city in the world.
Mount Isa is predominately a mining town and was founded more than 80 years ago. Mount Isa Mines is now owned by Swiss company Xstrata. The township is now a large mining and service orientated community and is considered to be the hub of the North West region.
Hard Times Mine is situated in the Outback @ Isa Centre.
This is a must see if you are visiting Mount Isa as It is the area's visitor information centre. There is a fabulous interactive multimedia gallery, outback park and Riversleigh Fossil Centre all in the one central location.
Children love this place as you can join the resident paleontologist on a fossil lab tour, surrounded by skulls, teeth and bones as he captivates you with stories of exciting nearby finds.

Mount Isa is often referred to as the 'Rodeo Capital of Australia' with the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere held every year in August. During this period visitors from all over Australia and the world make the long trip west, increasing the population to more than 30,000 people.
